Description

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is a Virginia state-chartered magnet school located in Alexandria, Virginia. It is a regional high school operated by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). As a publicly funded and administered high school with selective admissions, TJHSST is often compared with notable public magnet schools.  TJHSST is one of 18 Virginia Governor's Schools, and a founding member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology.  U.S. News & World Report ranked the school the best public high school in the nation in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

The project consisted of multiple additions to the existing school structure totaling more than 64,000 square feet. Additional asphalt parking areas, widening of existing access roads, a bio-retention facility and the relocation of recreational facilities were also included as part of the school improvements.

Project Highlights

GC&T provided a full array of services for the project including:

(i)           Subsurface exploration that included ten test borings for the building additions and bio‑retention facility.  Test pits were also performed to measure the dimensions of the existing footings.  Numerous asphalt cores of the existing asphalt surfaces were performed across the school site to evaluate the condition of the existing pavement;

(ii)        Geotechnical recommendations for the handling of high plasticity soils, existing man‑placed fill, earthwork specifications including suitable structural fill material specifications and compaction testing requirements, shallow foundation bearing capacity, seismic classification, slab-on-grade, asphalt paved areas and the bio‑retention facility.
