PROJECT NAME:

Ross Canopy @ 7 Corners

Description

The site is the existing Ross-Dress for Less clothing store located at 6298 Arlington Blvd, Seven Corners, Fairfax County, Virginia.  The site consists of a concrete sidewalk and existing canopy over the sidewalk, which is attached to the roof of the existing building.  Eight paneled columns support the existing canopy and extend from the top of the canopy down through the concrete sidewalk approximately eight feet below the top of the concrete sidewalk.

The proposed construction consisted of reconstructing/remodeling the front face of the existing building and reconstructing/remodeling the existing canopy.  The existing canopy remained, however a lower false ceiling was constructed below the canopy.  The front face of the canopy included a higher EFIS with Cornice over the four existing columns and a lower EFIS with Cornice over the two exterior columns on either side of the building.

The four middle columns had their footings extended in the front and sides to support the new column CMU block and brick façade panels and the new higher EFIS.  The footings of the two existing columns at either end of the canopy remained in place.  A new footing, located above the existing footings was constructed just below the sidewalk around the end of the columns to support the new lower EFIS.

Project Highlights

GC&T provided a full array of services for the project including:

(i)    Performed a subsurface investigation through the sidewalk and between carefully mapped underground utilities.  Performed during business hours utilizing barriers around equipment for safety precautions.  Limited access due to utility locations and limited access to the front of the building;

(ii)   Prepared final Geotechnical Report addressing recommendations for undercut and replace/reuse of existing fill material to support upper footing addition and bearing capacity for footing extensions.  Provided earthwork & excavation recommendations for the foundation construction.

(iii)  Construction Materials Testing and Inspection services that included bearing capacity testing, compacted fill testing, concrete testing, and specimen fabrication.

(iv) Performed EFIS inspection for the new canopy.
