MATERIALS TESTING
In order to determine the quality
of the construction materials being used, GC&T
performs:
•
Field and laboratory soil testing
•
Concrete, asphalt and reinforcing steel testing and
inspection
•
Structural steel inspection
GC&T
uses modern materials testing laboratory methods according to the
latest
industry standards and regulations to perform these tests.

Located
in Dulles, Virginia, our laboratory is accredited by the Washington
Area Council of Engineering Laboratories (WACEL) and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers (USACE). The laboratory is inspected by the AASHTO
Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and the Cement and Concrete
Reference Laboratory (CCRL). GC&T verifies
the results through a rigorous Quality Assurance Program.
We
train and certify our lab technician
personnel in their respective field of operation and
applicable test methods.

Our
Laboratory Manager and a Project Manager reviews and approves all of
our test results prior to acceptance. We maintain independent
calibration records for the required instrumentation in
accordance
with the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In
accordance with AASHTO, ACI, ASTM, EPA, DDOT, MDOT and VDOT standards,
we perform specific test procedures.
Our laboratory has
acquired extensive experience in soils and concrete
testing:
Soils –
The soil testing process starts with a careful sampling of the
materials to be tested. In order to determine the suitability of the
soils, our laboratory performs tests such as:
•
Moisture-Density relationship
•
Atterberg limits
•
Sieve analysis
•
Soil classification
• CBR
tests
• Hydrometer
testing
• Peak
strength direct shear test
• Residual direct shear test
• Expansion index test
• Organic
content test
• pH
test
•
Moisture content test
Concrete
- Our concrete services include complete inspection of concrete
batching plants, trucks, and curing procedures. We verify compliance
by utilizing procedures and specifications recommended by American
Concrete Institute (ACI) and American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM). Our field and laboratory services include:
• Sampling concrete for
compressive strength
• Slump test
•
Air Entrainment test
•
Temperature test
• Unit weight
test
• Compressive strength test
