Description

The old Safeway was razed for the construction of a 71,076 s.f. new two-story building, completed in only 376 days.  On the ground floor, there are 7,000 s.f. of street shops with entrances on Wisconsin Avenue.  The building included two levels of parking: level one is covered by the store and level two is located on a deck behind the store.

Project Highlights

GC&T provided a full array of services for the project including:

 

(i)               The preparation of a Pre-Construction Conditions Survey covering adjacent  buildings, including the Boys and Girls Club and the Citibank branch;

 

(ii)                Geotechnical Engineering Consultation Services during the demolition of the existing store in order to utilize existing structures for the construction of the new building;

 

(iii)        Vibration Monitoring to evaluate the levels of vibration generated during demolition and construction, and its possible effect on the adjacent structures;

 

(iv)             Construction Materials Testing and Inspection services that included field and laboratory soils and concrete testing during construction;

 

(v)          Structural Steel inspection that included inspection of the sufficient number of bolted connections, visual inspection of field-applied welds, and field erection of steel frame for plumbness and level.
